Common questions about B1 German examination practice
Our B1 practice tests are currently aligned with the CEFR levels assessed by telc exams. However, both telc and Goethe exams test the same CEFR B1 syllabus — the same vocabulary, grammar, and language skills. The main differences are in question formats and section timing. Practicing with our independently created practice tests effectively prepares you for any B1 German exam at the same CEFR level. We are actively developing Goethe-aligned practice tests, coming soon.
The B1 exam tests intermediate German skills – expressing opinions, discussing topics, and handling more complex everyday situations. It is often required for German citizenship applications and certain jobs.
With regular practice, most learners need 4-8 weeks of focused preparation. Our platform provides 40 mock exams and 500+ practice questions to help you prepare efficiently.
The B1 exam includes Reading (Leseverstehen), Listening (Hörverstehen), Writing (Schreiben), and Speaking (Sprechen). Our mock exams cover all four sections with exam-style questions.
Our AI provides detailed feedback on your writing tasks, explains listening comprehension answers, and helps you understand complex grammar structures typical of B1 level.
Yes! We offer 20 complete B1 speaking exam simulations with all three parts: introduction, discussing a topic, and planning together. Each includes examiner scripts and model responses.
Our practice materials are independently created to help you prepare for German exams — they are not official exam content and not reproduced from official examination materials. DeutschExam is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected with telc gGmbH, Goethe-Institut e.V., or ÖSD. Official exam formats may change over time. The Zertifikat Deutsch (also known as telc Deutsch B1) is an internationally recognized B1 certification. It includes reading, listening, writing, and speaking sections (150 min written + 15 min oral, 300 pts total, 60% to pass). It is on the BAMF list of recognized B1 certificates for German citizenship and permanent residence (as of February 2026). Our B1 practice tests are aligned with this exam level.
For German citizenship (Einbürgerung), you need at least a B1 certificate. The Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 is on the BAMF list of accepted B1 certificates for naturalization (as of February 2026). The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) with a B1 result is also accepted. Our B1 practice tests are aligned with the telc Deutsch B1 level. Always verify current requirements with your local Ausländerbehörde.
Yes, for most permanent residence applications (Niederlassungserlaubnis) in Germany, you need to prove B1 level German skills. The Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 is on the BAMF list of recognized B1 certificates for this purpose (as of February 2026). Our practice tests are aligned with this exam level. Always verify current requirements with your local Ausländerbehörde.
The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is a scaled A2-B1 exam taken at the end of German integration courses (100 min written, 100 pts). It can result in either an A2 or B1 certificate depending on your performance. The telc Deutsch B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch) is a standalone B1 exam with a different format (150 min written, 300 pts). Both are accepted for citizenship and permanent residence. Our practice tests are aligned with the telc B1 level, but practicing B1 competencies helps prepare for any B1 exam since the CEFR skills tested are the same.
We also offer comprehensive A1 Beginner exam practice with listening, reading, speaking, and writing exercises.
